so if I erase both my google+ account & gmail account or either, will I be unable to log into my chromebook from then on? can I just make a new gmail & eschew g+ account, yet log on? Also, can one post in google groups w/o a g+ account?

I'm having a Chromebook at home, I didn't tried what you have asked but I think that you will be able to looking until you connect your laptop to internet and ChromeOS will detect that you gmail is no longer available.
