Geeks.com has a refurbished Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10K RPM Hard Drive on sale for $39.99. Shipping is extra. I don't believe there is a limit on how many you can buy. If you plan to get at least two for RAID, shipping will be more reasonable.

Western Digital Raptor 74GB

Three things to keep in mind:
1) OMG!!! this is a refurbished HD!!! Stay away!!! (Or not).
2) This is an older model.
3) According to Maximum PC, you may be better off with a Seagate 7200.12 1TB drive (and that's potentially another can of worms).
The new 1TB Barracuda?s read and write speeds approach those of the Western Digital Velociraptor.

other than the access time, the old raptor really doesn't perform any better than the new caviar black or seagates. My biggest beef is that it's significantly noisier than the newer drives. Unless you put it in a well insulated (sound-wise) case, or one that already has loud fans, the clicking becomes irritating. Pass.

I bought and installed one of these a year ago, as an OS drive. Honestly, I don't see any speed improvement over modern 7200 drives like the Caviar Black.

Says the guy with a PIII?

And that's the new rig.

They're a little outdated now but for an intelligent guy that wants to set-up a decent OS and storage drive scenerio, it's a perfect OS starter package. The Raptor could be replaced at any time with a small SSD drive for a system update.

I feel the guys that go goo-goo over a single 1TB drive for an entire set-up are positioning themselves to be very sorry when there's an OS or HD problem.

IMHO, it's a no-brainer to split the OS and storage for easy recovery and/or repair.

The Raptors still excel at seek times, can be utilized very well in an OS/Storage drive set-up, and upgraded with a minimum effort.

Serious? I see the improvements in OS boot times, and game load times. Love my raptors! I will be saying the same thing when SSD drives drop in price :D
