Refurbished Sparkle Power Supplies--Possibly hot.

Thanks OP,
I just ordered a FSB250 and a FSB350, plus a couple of other items for combined shipping of $12.17

refurbished :X now i'm not saying i'm not a fan of refurbished products but i am not a fan of a device that has a chance of blowing up hardware... never the less it's a very good price 🙂

Spakle/FSP HQ are in CA probably not far from SVC ..I bet they got them direct.

Just a guess but it makes sence to me that refurbed units have gone thru more testing then the regular factory PSUs..give that repairs like these have to be done by hand.

After looking over those PSUs the only one with a strong , over 20A 12V rail is the FSP550, the very same PSU @ Newegg is $100 plus + shipping.

Most of the others have around a 15A 12V rail.

I needed to replace a small form 150W PS (FSB150-50PL1A) and most places wanted $40. I found this place that had them for $12: http://www.excess-solutions.com. You have to spend $25 so I bought 2 plus threw in an extra $1 and it was still cheaper than the other sites.

Ditto. Assuming that these are in fact "factory refurbished", and not just the vendor reselling returned/used units calling them "refurb" (as some other well-known online retailer was known to do...), then they are probably alright. Especially if a qualified factory tech personally inspected them. That's way better QC than if they simply rolled off of a production line in China.

I purchased my Yamaha 6416S SCSI CD-RW back in the day as a factory refurb, for around $40 under the normal retail price, and honestly, it lasted a good, long time. I sold it to someone to put into their older rig, it was still working, although it was a little dodgy with CD-RWs. But those drives were know to be like that too.

+12V @ 20A is good, @ 15A is pretty low, unless you're only running a P3 rig.

when they say refurbished, im sure they mean the 80mm fan died and had to be replaced, ect... you know, common psu things.

i've never seen a sparkle go bad, they're on my top 5 list fo sho'

These are really Fortron PSU's ... note the 'FSP' in the product code.

Extremely solid PSUs, one of the best IMHO; too bad they don't have the 530w in there too...

another n00bie bought on wattage hype

I'm not so sure how well these would do for the latest and greatest power sucking peripherals in a new box, (NF4+dual 6800GT SLI+SATA 8 Drive RAID 5 Array+enough lights to light up a city block, etc) but for the most part these ought to be good enough to take care of most anything underneath that, unless you're severely taxing the +12v rails (try checking with a multimeter under load and compare to what the bios is reporting...If still not up to snuff, and you're experienced in doing so, adjust the pots a little bit.)

lol. Yea, you would never use that much power anyways. Most computers only use around 200w most of the time. And before you go buy a cheap 550W psu, make note that Sparkle does not use a "max peak" style of rating their wattage. When they say 350W, that probably means its equivalent to some 500-600 PSU from a cheaper company.

all right mr. expert 😛,

Can one of the 400w sparkles handle, atlon xp 2500, mobo will have a SB live an al lan card firewire card, 2 7200 rpm ide hdds, 2 optical drives and a say 6600 vid. card? and 80mm fans...
and how much more can you push it? Say can it take say another two scsi 15k rpm hdds and upgrade to geforce 6800gt (do the higher end vid. cards pull that much more juice?)

I'm not an expert 😛

But I think it should be able to take that. I have a similar set up, 1 less HDD and a R9800Pro and I'm using an Antec True430 with no problems. Since Antec isn't a "continuous" 430, I guess one of those Sparkle 400W should easily handle your setup. I would change, but I'm wondering if the Sparkles are loud. The Antec is pretty noisy IMHO.

Stock, the 400watt model with the 80mm fan is pretty noisy...It is a thermally controlled fan, but the thermoresistor is placed in such a fashion to keep it ramped up pretty much at maximum; You could always replace the fan in such cases.
