If you ever wanted to get a DSLR camera this is a great deal. The kit lens is pretty good but I'd pair it up with either a 35 or 50mm lens at 1.8 if you want great low light pictures.
It has the same sensor as its bigger brother the D7000 which is ~$1k depending on the lens pairing, and takes fabulous pictures.
Ken Rockwell calls it "the best all-around camera for most people. It's an extraordinary camera, and easy to use".

One thing to note is that a few of the reviews weren't happy with the refurbished cameras they got, I'd join the Adorama club for $8/year to get a year warranty on it which should cover this cam http://www.adorama.com/pages/vip?ut...ate&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=rflaid21866
