Refurbished Monitor - Good Idea or Not Worth the Risk?

I'm okay with a shorter warranty period, but there is one thing that makes me nervous-the possibility that the reason it was returned and now is refurbished is due to dead pixels. I think tigerdirect has a good return policy, but I'll have to look into that to be certain.

Any thoughts?

The way I look at refurbish is that the manufacture had a chance of calibrating the device twice. And, they wouldn't send it back out to the consumer if it failed their standard.

I got a refurbish Sony 15" CRT in 1992 and it was a great monitor till I sold it in 1996.

Refurbished you would think would be better because someone tested the product, found an issue and the manufacturer was able to focus on addressing that specific reported issue. If the unit is sufficiently discounted and has a satisfactory return policy then I would give it a try. It should be okay particularly if that model gets good reviews to begin with.

While I cant speak for what you are looking at getting, I have had store people tell me that in cases of bankruptcy buyout or manufacturers just clearing inventory at dirt cheap prices it sometimes comes with the conditions of having to be marked as refurbished because its being sold at such discounted prices even though its brand new product. So not all things marked as refurbished are necessarily refurbished.

to be honest, refurbished is significantly better then the alternative you painted...

As for buying a refurb:
1. Are there are a LOT of that specific model up for refurb? it may be a lemon (which means it will quickly fail on you, eventually out of warranty.
2. How much money do you save?
3. What kind of warranty do they offer?

If the warranty is good, the price is good, and there are no unusual failure rates with that specific model, then I see no reason why not to buy it.

:D Yeah right.

Honestly if its cheap and still has some guarantee then go for it, it'll be no better or worse than a new one.

Well I wasnt trying to imply that new stuff stamped as refurbished was better than refurbished stuff,(although refurbished items have a higher chance of having minor cosmetic scratches if you care about that sort of thing) just pointing out that the refurbished tag dosnt always mean what it says, its sort of like books that get a little ink stripe put on the pages so they can sell them at discounted prices.
