Refurbished Dell Laptops

I found a deal with Dell Outlet to purchase a 2.0 Ghz P4 Inspiron 1100 laptop with 15" display for 683 shipped. Should I hook this up? I'm planning to go to grad school soon (which requires a laptop) and I've noticed older models selling for about the same price (even used 800 mhz laptops). I need some advice ASAP as it's sitting in my cart but won't for long. THanks!

Damn, my cart timed out and it's gone...

There's no link since their refurbished, they're first come first serve...and I'm guessing it got served to someone who's less tentative of shelling out ~700 bucks...

Second question...if I don't get a dvd drive in my 1100, am I up the creek? I know they don't have interchangeable drives...

i think you can always buy a external (firewire/USB DVD-roms?) DVD.

better yet, wait for a deal for the dell's m500/m600 with the pentium-M instead of a celery. the 1100 is also heavy and has terrible graphics

or buy a laptop with a athlonXP-m CPU. cheaper and usually has better specs. look for one on hpdirect or something. go search on hotdeals forum

What's weird is CNet (which is where I go to get reviews on stuff I know nothing about) said that the Inspiron 1100 was one of the best affordable laptops around. They did mention that it was heavy and kind of warm but overall one of the best. Responses?

Unless you are going to be using the laptop for gaming or video encoding and other such CPU-intensive projects, you probably won't notice a difference in a laptop furnished with a P4 or one with a P4 -based Celeron.

Guess this one's going to ebay, unless I can sell it to my parents...

well $699 is not that bad of a deal. it is around 8 pounds which i find somewhat defeats the whole purpose of having a portable notebook, and it has intel integrated graphics, which is definitely not enough for even casual gaming

but if you're a graduate student who uses it to present powerpoints or write your papers on the road, it's a fine laptop.

and Cnet? i wouldn't trust them much. go to these sites for reviews...

tom's hardware, where everyone says its biased

hardocp

and the best site to go to and ask questions

have fun with your laptop. i wan't able to sell my computer and buy a laptop. =(

Well, there were some credit card issues and I didn't end up getting it after all...prices are running much higher now though, so I may wait.

I'm taking to heart what you said about the Athlon XP cpu. I'd REALLY like to get a dell 8500 with the geforce4 vidcard, but that's quite pricey. But I love Nvidia chips, had them since my voodoo.
