Still using my 1st gen 16 gig one and it is working well, though is just a little on the laggy side after how much I've put it through. Still a great tablet (especially for $100) if you're looking for something cheap, or as a gift for someone who doesn't know or care for the newest and best.

My 1st gen had been starting to lag with 4.4.2 so I wiped it and put Slimrom's grouper on it (4.4.2) and it is back to full speed.

Can you explain, in a short sentence, what this does? Does it just trim the fat off the OS to make it run faster? I had a nexus 7, dropped and shattered the screen, but I may want to pick up another one. As much as I'd like to get a 2013 model or even wait for the 2014 version, $100 is very hard to say no to.

...so why are cell phones so expensive?

The question is "why is it so cheap?" It's not because Newegg is making a profit, but because there is no way enough inventory is going to move without selling it at such discounted prices. While Google might have pocketed Newegg's money at least at cost, is a little more than the MSRP of the 2012 Nexus 7, Newegg is probably losing some money from these sales, just not as much as they would have lost if the units weren't sold at all.

thats cheap...I dont mind buying refurbs since I usually sell the stuff anyways at a later date to buy the newer product...I could have had 2 for the price of 1 and still made my money back on it

business 101: price is what people are willing to spend.
around my neighborhood, a $10 haircut is just as good as the one at Hair Cuttery that's $30. im pretty sure some hair cuts cost $1000 too. but i dont belong in that hood.

I thought the TRIM support in the newer versions Android helped a lot with the lag? My 2013 model has been doing great, so I assumed the older one was helped by the new updates.
