refurb a mobo?

I am getting ready to order/build my new haswell system and I will be giving a friend my current computer (hes still running an 8800 gts and core2quad).

The system pretty much runs without fault, except for the motherboard. It overheats quite easily when stressed in a hot environment and shuts the computer down.

I have a ASUS Rampage III Gene LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard.

What can I do to remedy this? Maybe reseat some heatsinks?
I can't start re-soldering things.
 
If you are OC'ing, stop it. If not, try underclocking. You might also consider a better cooling system for the CPU. BTW, the mobo IS the heart of the system!
 
Pull the case cover and use compressed air to blow all the dust out first, then observe that the CPU and case fans all appear to be operating. Next, install SpeedFan to check the actual CPU and mobo temps, as well as what rpms the fans are actually running at. If a fan is turning to slowly to provide good cooling it indicates that its rpm needs to be adjusted, or it needs to be replaced. At the very least, you should definitely pull the CPU heatsink and replace the TIM.

The CPU temps are fine. I am not OCing that system (although I might before I give it away).

Its purely the mobo that is overheating. I believe the message is IOH over temp or something along those lines.
 
If it's just the IOH that's overheating then there's insuffcient airflow to its heatsink. Have you tried spot cooling it with an additional fan or considered installing a larger more efficient aftermarket heatsink if there's not room to add an additional fan? Have you tried rearranging cabling and/or components that may be blocking its airflow?

Can you undervolt the southbridge? Undervolting the memory may help (or may not -- I don't know if that affects voltage on the data lines). Underclocking the RAM should help.

If you want to get into it, you can try reseating the heat sink on the mobo.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them on the weekend.

There is plenty of airflow to the mobo. The IOH is the only thing that hits unreasonable temps of over 100c.
 
If the IOH is getting good airflow then I'd suspect the thermal material has gone south and isn't efficiently transferring heat to the heatsink anymore.

Get ARCTIC MX-4 which is non-conductive and made for applying to onboard chips. Once the heatsink/pipe assembly has been removed and all the old TIM cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol, lay the assembly on a very flat surface and check that both the contact plates lay perfectly flat. If they don't lay on the same plane, gently tweak the assembly until they do because if they don't lay on the same plane they won't sit flat on the chips, which defeats the whole purpose. Test fit the heatsink assembly on the chips to make sure the contact plates sit flat on both chips before applying the MX-4. Retighten the heatsink assembly attaching screws gradually, to keep the contact plates sitting flat on the chip pads.
