Turns out my Kenmore fridge is a POS LG. I don't like LG for anything and have avoided them....I didn't realize I accidentally gave them money.
It's having defrost issues that came up pretty suddenly. The ice maker stopped making ice...(I think the line got frozen). I unplugged the fridge and let it thaw for 2 days. It made ice, but then froze up again a week later and the fridge side stopped getting cold enough. I'm trying to figure out what parts to order. I took the freezer apart this past weekend to inspect it and the drain was plugged with a chunk of ice. I did the hair dryer trick and cleaned everything out. The freezer was working, but then the fridge wasn't getting cold enough.
I figured out that the frost is a sign that water is standing in the drain basin and being blown by the fan...which then causes the moisture to freeze. So ultimately this is just a defrost issue...parts manual is showing me that it could be a sensor($), the heater($$), or a control board ($$$).
I put an ohm meter on the sensor and it wasn't open...so it's likely good...but I'm going to tear into the whole thing again this evening to test the heater element before I drop $75 on a replacement.
How would a bad heating element cause the fridge to be warm? As with most fridge/freezer combos, there's a duct that runs between them and a fan kicks on. I can hear the fan running when the doors are closed...I'm just wondering if there's ice blocking the duct overhead that I didn't clear. Anyone got any experience with LG's?
