Trying to optimize my system and I was wondering if I could get some info on refresh rates. I have specs as follows.
A7V333 no raid
XP2200+ running 1800mhz
512mb 333 PC2700 Samsung (although it is running at 266 because of some unresolved issues)
Visiontek GF4 4600
RIC 17" monitor.

I don't know the refresh rates supported by this monitor and plan to upgrade to 19" as soon as I can get a chainsaw and hack the hutch off my desk, cuz 19" won't fit right now. Anyone have any ideas 1. where I can get some info on what rates it supports or 2. what rates would be good to try. Since I have got some good hardware I would like to try to get it looking good.

Thanks ahead of time :)

Most 17" monitors support a good 85Hz at 1024x768 and 75Hz at 1280x1024. Depending on your own preference you may or may not like 75Hz. Personally I never use anything less than 85Hz because anything less gives me a headache after extended periods.

Oh forgot to mention I was using 1024x768x32. So changint the refresh to 75hz won't kill the monitor or anything? Does the refresh sharpen things up? And I suppose raising the refresh will lower framerates? This is the first system I am really trying to tweak out since I actually got decent parts this time:)

With a low refresh you will get a flicker which may give you a headache. Almost any decent monitor can support refresh rates above 75 to 85 hertz. I use 1024x768 at 100hz on my 19" NEC monitor.

if u installed the latest drivers for your 17" monitor, you should just set the refresh rate to the max that your monitor can support. In the adapter properties it will list all supported rate by your monitor can handle if you have the right monitor inf installed. I have a 17" running at 1024x768 32bit at 100hz, with 640x480 at 170hz for games.
