Refresh Rate

Hello, i just bought a new Samsung 955DF for my system that i am building in a few days. As of now, im using it on my older computer (1.4ghz, 512 SD, geforce4 mx420) and when i set the resolution to 1280x1024 and the refresh rate to 60, the monitor looks great, but it hurts my eyes a little. If i up the refresh rate at all, my screen starts to wave a little in the middle, and jitter uncontrolably around the edges. I know that the 955DF is a decent moniter, so is this happening because of my cruddy video card? Help, im so confused...

I doubt its your video card. Sounds like interference from a device or faulty wiring. Check connections, try another power outlet, rearrange plugs on the surge protector, or leave monitor off and unplugged for an hour and see if it comes back.

I agree with Regs. This is common when a monitor is too close to good speakers or a breaker box.

I unplugged my moniter for the night and put it in its own surge protector and outlet, and its much happier now. Thanks for the help, i would have never guessed power was the problem!

As far as the breaker box, its in my closet... so does that mean any outlets close to it are screwy?

Could be. When my monitor starting flickering just shortly after one of my breakers switched off. Either a faulty outlet, circut, or overload.

Well, it seems that my house just has bad power, as when the AC turns on, or multiple other computers/ electronic appliances are on, my monitor gets shakey again at high resolution and high refresh. So i believe the house may not have enough power, or may have "dirty" power... any suggestions?

I guess your short term solution is to get a expensive surge protector. One that holds a charge, kind of like a PSU for a computer. Obviously you want a electrician to check out the circuits in your house.

It could also be interference from the AC unit or other appliances (such as vacuums, etc). Do your shaky monitor episodes coincide with the AC unit turning on every time or other high-powered devices turning on in the area?

I had a similar problem with two different Samsungs (900NF, 1100DF). It is definitely interference from a nearby source. Crazy as this sounds, just take the monitor into a different room and see if you get the same results. The interference could be coming from a cable wire, speakers, A/C, or even the table you placed it upon (don't laugh, that turned out to be my problem, partially). Samsungs, from my experience are just more prone to interference than other monitor brands. Best to isolate the problem.

Yep, it sounds like the Samsungs are extremely succeptable to power-line interference. Best bet is to get a line-conditioning UPS, like an APC SmartUPS model. Not super-cheap, but cheaper than re-wiring a building. It also provides protection from brownouts and power failures. It's a good investment if you value your computer gear.

Edit: I've been in places with low power, and my NEC 17" CRT never displayed any visible power-related anomoly. I have everything wired through a Tripp-Lite UPS. (Only a standby UPS not a fancy line conditioning one). The UPS switches to battery power if someone turns on the microwave in the kitchen, and sometimes the lights dim when doing same. So I would have to say, that perhaps Samsungs are more affected by those issues than most.

I agree. Three people just in this thread alone , including myself with a history of interference problems with Samsung's CRT is more than a coincidence.

Yeh, and it's a shame too, since the actual performance of Samsung's have always been excellent. I've owned three (950P, 900NF, 1100DF) and they were excellent monitors, particularly the 950P and 900NF. But the interference proved too much with the 900NF and 1100DF, so I switched to the Mitsubishi 930SB. Awesome monitor. 😀 Very impressive.

Bigbird, have you called Samsung? Have them exchange the monitor. At least you can rule out the actual unit as the problem.

if you have other electronic devices next to your monitor it might cause such a thing
ie: water cooling system's pump

I noticed that with my monitor

good luck

interesting. I have a Samsung 900IFT (fantastic monitor) and I've never had a single wobble or glitch at all with the picture... not saying I think you guys are lying though, just happy I guess.. LOL 🙂
