refresh rate problem with Toshiba laptop graphics adapter

Yesterday I got a cheap secondhand Toshiba Satellite 2540 CDS laptop 333MHz, 32mb RAM, TFT screen. The onboard graphics adapter is an S3 Virge / MX rev1, 2mb.

This does 800x600 in 24 bit colour, which I usually switch down to 16 bit cos it makes no difference for the basic desktop apps that I use. However, after working on it for a couple of hours, my head began to hurt, and then I realised that the refresh rate was set to 60hz, which is the only option (the graphics adapter default and optimal are the same).

I was wondering if there is anything I can do about this. I have searched for newer drivers, but I get the ones I already have from all the places I have looked, including the Toshiba site itself.

It is quite irritating, because the only other laptop I have used is a 3 year old Toshiba 133, and that looked much better.

Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Cheers :)

LCD screens don't usually support refresh rates above 60 Hz.

The major reason that high refresh rates are preferred on CRT monitors is because they prevent flicker. LCD screens don't flicker.

LCD screens are also very slow to update, so even this argument for high refresh rates is worthless.

I'd look elsewhere for the cause of the problem.

Thanks for your help :)

I stuck on the latest video drivers that toshiba had, but they are still a year old, and cos the graphics card is an S3, I can;t seem to find any drivers elsewhere.
