Refresh rate limited to 85Hz; VGA<DVI converter?

Well, my new system runs great (specs in the 'RedEye' link in my sig), and all the games/benchmarks that i've tried so far, even with no OC'ing yet, are leaps and bounds faster than they used to be, but i'm stuck @ 60Hz (or a really fuzzy, off-kilter 85Hz), and I really have no idea why.

It's not my monitor's capabilities (I had it running at 200Mhz @ 1280x960 or 100Mhz @ 1600x1200 before), and I really doubt it's the video card (eVGA 7900GT KO), but to be honest, I only have the most rudimentary knowledge of refresh rates, so i'd appreciate if anybody could render any advice on the situation.

As was stated above, i'm using a VGA>DVI converter to connect my monitor, and that was really the only thing that I could think of that might be causing this problem. My native resolution in XP is 1280x960, because it seems to fit my monitor best.

When I try to change the refresh rate, the monitor goes black and displays the following in it's little default menu font :

Out of Range

H : 31Hz - 95Hz
V : 50Hz - 120Hz

Check PC Settings?

Thanks in advance for any help. To me, on this CRT (Sceptre P98V 19"), anything lower than 100Hz and it looks to me like the monitor is flickering slightly, and though it doesn't bother me much asthetically, it tends to give me some nasty headaches.

It sounds like one of two things is happening... either your moniter is on its way out & simply won't perform up to spec's anymore, or for some reason your 7900 isn't correctly supporting the moniters DDC which happened to me with my old Viewsonic 21 inch CRT when I upgraded to an X1900XTX & had to use a DVI/VGA converter too.
I was unable to get my Viewsonic to refresh at anything above an eyeball-roasting 60hz no matter what I tried, so I finally switched to my backup NEC 21 inch & it for some reason is working fine... the Viewsonic btw is fine as well connected to a VGA port on one of my backup PC's.

*Update* I can run 85Hz looking decent now after a little tweaking, but when I try to run a game at 85Hz and set it so in the game, it goes back to the Out of Range thing on my monitor...

Sorry, didn't think of this before, but have you installed the Nvidia Coolbits v2 hack?

The reason I ask is that it will not only enable the built-in Nvidia overclocking utility, but another that will allow you to override moniter refresh rates from within the driver itself... use caution though & make sure your moniter supports the refresh rates you set.
