Refresh or re-install?

Just changed the mobo in my rig and did a refresh of Win7 using the upgrade trick and I'm not sure if its as good as a clean install. I went from an H55 mobo to an Asrock P67 Transformer mobo that lets me use my old cpu and while everything seems OK, my SSD writes are lower while the reads are up to sata 6GB speeds but sporadically. The refresh trick is supposed to make the system run like a clean install but I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is right for the new mobo or if should just do a clean install. Any recommendations?

Are you sure your SATA controllers are in AHCI mode? I know many motherboards used to default to "IDE emulation" which can really slow down SSD drives. If not, you might be able to enable it in your BIOS and restart Windows 7. Maybe Windows 7 will automatically pick it up and switch.

Its on ahci mode in the bios so that's not an issue. Guess I'm wondering if the other stuff on the SSD might affect performance.

i don't mess around with o/s - you have a major problem (ie virus/malware) you reinstall. no point in doing less than a perfect job - probably why i've never seen a BSOD on my win7 boxens. backup and clean installs always win in the long run.

If you don't want to mess with the reinstall, sysprep it. Most Win 7 distros can re-arm 3 times. If you sysprep it it will go through the out of box hardware detection all over again.

Decided to just reinstall the OS and it does make a difference, at least in tests. Got much better and stabler results now in the SSD tests which is what I was expecting with the sata 6GB connection. Finally getting the full performance from my Crucial SSD and I'm happy about getting the new P67 platform benefits. Gonna have to start OCing next to see how my new mobo handles my i5 760 cpu. Thanks for the replies.
