Refresh my memory on dual pcie cards

Right now I am running dual 7800 gt, is it possible to replace one with a 7900 gtx or such and still use sli? Or if I ditch sli and replace one card with a x1900 and use the other one for my other monitors; I run three monitors and an hdtv.

option 1 = not possible if ya still wanna run SLI. option 2 = possible however the nvidia and ati drivers are not gonna play nice and could end up casuing u a big headache.

I wonder then, just wait a year or so, and then replace the one nvidia with a current gen of that year.

I would be wanting a single card solution that outperforms sli by a considerable margin and still be able to use the second 7800gt for multiple monitors.
