Reformatting the HD

Not sure if this is the right place, so I backed up my HD today and wanted to reformat it. I was wondering a few things though. Whats the point of reformatting if I am just going to put all the stuff back onto the HD that was there before? My other question is, will it erase windows and all of my operating systems if I format my hard drive?

thanks

If your getting a lot of errors, and your drive is extremly cluttered. A reformat is good. Yes windows will al be gone, all your programs, all your music, and files... everything is toast. Video Drivers, Internet Drivers, Sound Card drivers, and Programs... All these need to be reinstalled.

If you have a good XP disk, it will have DX9, and SP2 and a lot of other goodies installed on it which will cut a lot of service time off getting your computer up and running.

Depending on how much you have a good reformat will take a couple of days, with a few scattered hours of work here and there on it. to get it fully functionable.

Reformats are a rather drastic measure, I would only reformat if the drive is infected with virus/mailware you can't get rid of. If your drive is cluttered just do a defrag no need to reformat.

I'd Say a good setup would be, a primary drive with all your programs and games and everything, then a second drive to store you .mp3's or photos, saved games and such. A back up file of your systems drivers, and install programs such as MSN, AIM, is a good file to have to. Might look into coping a .ISO of your disk onto a back up harddrive as well. But that can fill up space rather quickly.

So I took the idea of just using the external as my music/photo/file saver, when I tried to delete the backup of my HD it says that deleting it may cause some programs not to work.

What should I do?
