reformatting MBR

I want to get rid of win2k. I tried changing around the boot.ini by taking out the win2k option, but it just gives me a nasty error and wont boot. I was told reformatting my MBR would fix that, is that true? How do you format the MBR exactly? I tried typing "format/MBR" and "format /MBR", what did I miss, all it says is that "/MBR is an invalid switch".
thanks,
-doug

UPDATE: Nevermind, it is fdisk /mbr, my mistake. But still, will fdisking the mbr fix my problem? Will I still be able to boot into 98?

What FDISK /MBR will do is take out the Windows NT/2000 pointer to the NTLDR program that loads Windows NT/2000. By running FDISK with the /MBR option from a Windows 98 boot disk, you should be able to boot into Windows 98.

boot the 2k install cd. choose repair. console. when you login to a 2k installation, type fixmbr at the command prompt.

Doing this will only repair the MBR for Windows 2000. It will not remove the NTLDR pointer at the beginning of the drive.
