After the unavailability or need to upgrade of various software functions for the preinstalled Win XP Home version on our new Compaq Presario 1700 notebook, the question arises:

Does anyone know if it is workable to just reformat and go back to Win 2K on this particular notebook ?

I have all the Win 2K software that may be needed, and, of course, all softare and utilites are Win 2K compatible at this point, but not so with Win XP, at least yet.

A while back, I could not get Compaq or Toshiba modem, etc., drivers and used the available Sony Vaio notebook Win 2k drivers to outfit a Sony Vaio notebook, driver by driver, and it works great.

Being the ?Home? rather than the ?Pro? version of Win XP is not a plus, but I would not want to reformat the drive, install Win 2K and then find that I do not have all the drivers to make the Compaq Presario 1700CL notebook fully functional in Win 2K.

Anyone have experience with the Win 2K drivers for this Notebook ?

As long as you have all the W2K drivers for your laptop, there's nothing to stop you from formatting. Laptops work just the same as desktops when it comes to installing software/setup. Just make sure you have any special power-saving/battery monitoring software and PCMCIA drivers necessary.

ST4R, yes this is actually the question at hand. I am curious is anyone has experience with this particular notebook. It is the point you raise that I would not want to not have a missing utility or driver.
