reformatted HDD & old one still in PIO mode ?!?!

i reformatted & installed fresh XP on my ne HDD & deleted XP on my old.

so all starting from scratch.

after the install the new (boot) comes up as in UDMA Mode 5 , which is what i was after

but my old one (IDE1) is in transfer mode PIO still!!

i thought a re-formatted would put it back to UDMA Mode 5, like it was before

could my HDD be permanently damaged ??

any ideas ???

Hard drive modes are usually detected in BIOS, so you really shouldn't need to format to get your HD mode to change...

Check your BIOS setup and see if the drive is set to DMA, also, make it a Master, sometimes that helps. Do you know for a fact that the drive supports Ultra DMA? It may not...

no mate.
i am talkign about the known problem VIA's southbridge has with CRC errors off your HDD or IDE devices.

WinXP is good enough to detect these errors (6 & your down stepped)

but after a re-format of the os it should be back up to UDMA Mode 5

thers nothng wrong with my BIOS, latest updates & detects fine as UDMA Mode 5, both of them do,

but just for some strange reason WinXP, after down stepping my OLD HDD countless times & it has remained there this time when installing XP on a new HDD.

i am going to try & format the old one & unistall it & reinstal it to see if that does the trick

my old one is ATA 100 , new one is ATA 133

Maybe XP writes some kind of additional info in the boot strap to let itself know the next time this drive is used in XP it is known to have problems so it slows it down automatically.

Ok probably not but ..........😀

yeah i am thinking that.

Microsoft thinks of everything!!
dont they ?? 😉

well i am gonna transfer the data off & re-format it, atleast this way i can make it NTFS
