Reformating problem

Recently i tried to reformat my friends computer. And when the blue screen shows up like when u reformat it shows up an Error, i dont remember what the msg was but i am sure is says an error. Do u know how i can avoid the error so i can reformat?

My telepathy is on the fritz again... perhaps you could fill in some details, like what version of what operating system you're using, what exactly the error message was, what tool you're using to format the drive, or really just about anything beyond "I get an error when I format".
