Reformating Issue From Vista To XP

Well the problem is hopefully an easy one.

After a while of using vista on my new laptop i realised that i missed xp alot more then i thought i would. When i tried to install xp on to the laptop it kept giving me errors that there was no hard drive....

this though me though a loop because i know my hard drive is perfectly alright in fact im using the same laptop atm to post this except with Ubunto instead of vista...still not xp...

Also i was trying to install xp on my friends laptop as well which also had a coppy of vista on it at the time.

both of the hard drives are sata if that has anything to do with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the bios, you have to set the sata mode to 'IDE' Right now it's probably set to AHCI, which you'd have to have a floppy for and it's a pain in the ass.

Once you set it to IDE in the bios, XP will see the hard drive fine.

I think i just might..... i cant seem to find any options that will change my hard drive from SATA to IDE

i have heard this before but im just not sure how to go about setting it

The bios is Pheonixstar and from the main f2 menu i am unable to see where i could change the harddrive setting.

i have heard of sometimes the manufacturers making two bios configs to a certain extent one being a basic one for normal users and the other hidden so that the settings you can change that might mess up the computer arent able to be tampered with by the avg joe

Any idea?

It could be presented as "Native" SATA support with options to enable/disable. If so, set to disable.

Well i just checked for that and thats a no go

What is the make/model of your laptop? You might be able to integrate the "F6 floppy" drivers into the install files then burn it to CD. It works on some hardware but not others.

Heh that sounds all sorts of fun...... well this one is a Toshiba Sattelite a205 something or other

and the gateway would be.....MT6840 laptop

it's exactly as you said, Sata drivers.

slipstream the ich8m intel drivers for sataII onto your XP disk using Nlite.

It will install like a champ after that.

ich8 is the chipset that your laptop has

sata I / II is the driver that is needed to recognize your HDD

Intel makes them

you need a XP pro disk with sp2 or sp3 on it (preferred)

Nlite is software, google it

Nlite adds the little intel sata driver to a .iso of your xp disk. It copies the data off the disk onto your hdd, adds the little driver folder into the x86driver.cab, and reburns the iso for you. You now have a xp disk with the necessary drivers for your laptop hdd.

You then reinsert the xp disk and install as normal. It's a very easy process and nlite does it all for you as you click "next" through the program.

Do a search for NLite.
Run NLite and feed it your SATA controller's drivers when it asks for them.
Ask NLite to burn the new slipstreamed CD.

if you don't have a win machine handy, pray that ubuntu burns cds, uses the internet, and runs nlite, and you're good to go!
