reformat question

i want to back up most of my files (media, data etc) from my windows HDD to a new 160gb that i got. if i copy all the files i want to keep to the new HDD, which is now installed, will i be able to access all the data when i reinstall windows on the other HDD? will windows recognize the HDD without having to reformat or anything?

also, i'm installing windows onto another 160gb HDD, should i partition it so windows is on say a 5gb partition with all my program files and have another 155gb partition for everything else?
