Reformat and Upgrade to Win98, now no drive letter assigned to Secondary HDD

In device manager the drive is recognized and it even says it is functioning properly, but it is not assigned a drive letter...

he backed up all of his files on that drive, so it is important that he doesnt have to format it to fix this problem.

Is your master on the end of the cable?

Is your second HDD selected correctly as master or slave?
Not sure where you have it. If it's on the same channel as your other HD it should be jumbered as slave if your primary HD is at the end of the cable (it should be the master. Check the jumpers.

Otherwise....after everything is hooked up right....
Did you look in the CMOS and see if you can auto or manually detect it?

I take it this computer originally had only one drive?

After all that, you could always delete the drive from Device manager and let Windows find it again and see if it picks up the letter.
