Wow. $5.50 per 70mL of ink. How much does ink cost in the USofA? They are raping us!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last time I checked you could buy a gallon of top quality photo printer ink on the third party market for $85.00. And have it blended to match the OEM specs of any printer.

When we buy the same basic ink in the form of OEM cartridges, the comparable prices ranges from a low of about $2500/gal all the way up to over $20,000/gal.

So yes Virtual Larry, there is a huge markup. Its why I refill my non-chipped Canon.

Seems in Indonesia and Thailand, there is a huge booming industry for Continuous Ink Systems, refilling, and refilling kits. Retrofitting a printer costs about 27 usd. CISS is better than refilling cartridges because sometimes the cartridge can dry before new ink is added. CISS never allows the ink to run out. A C41 Canon cartridge easily costs 25 usd. I speak from experience

Epson decided its better to design/market their own system as to not lose out to aftermarket ink. There is a non multifunction L100 that goes for about 100 usd.

Hopefully and logically other companies will follow suite.

I would like to agree with the the s96822 position as he says, CISS is better than refilling cartridges because sometimes the cartridge can dry before new ink is added. CISS never allows the ink to run out. A C41 Canon cartridge easily costs 25 usd. I speak from experience" And quite frankly I disagree.

When we deal with a print head external to the cartridge as typified in Canon or Epsoms, printhead clogging has little to do with CSS or not. As long as printing is over the once per 3 months threshold, CSS or not makes no difference as long as the User does not ignore low ink warnings too long.

But unlike all Canons that use thermoelectric printing methods, Some Epsom printers likewise use thermo electric, but some Epsons use peizo electric instead. And in the latter case, they don't call Epsom printers clogmasters instead.

Th other reason for me to doubt the OP, is that the most frequent larger volume demand comes from the photo printing community, and since that community demands at least a 5 color inkjet, that foreign printer ain't ready to meet US demand.

I had been been refilling my Canon pixma mp160 original cartridges however ran into the need to buy new cartridges now and then (expensive) Ink level indicators became unreliable with refilled cartridges even if they were reset. I had refilled carts die or become poor quality after 3 weeks of not printing.

Now using new cartridges immediately modified with CISS have had zero problems. I am living in thailand currently and it is hot and cannot a/c the room 24/7 just for the printer.

Then I can certainly understand why you went CISS. Those tiny cartridges are only 1/3 t0 1/5 the size of the BCI-3&6 cartridges.

how in the world did the inkjet printer market screw themselves over so bad that laser printers are actually gaining mainstream popularity?

I understand that if they sold ink near cost and just made money off the printers, they would never be rich... however to charge for ink at prices that makes gold jealous is just ridiculous.

i really cant believe some off brand company hasnt released a tanked system like epson has overseas. if it was decent quality, id imagine it would dominate the market.

At computer/tech shopping malls there are numerous stores dedicated to CISS and/or refilling ink. Some sell ciss pre-configured new printers.

Epson was careful as to limit the warranty to region only apparently concerned about grey market G7.

There is a similar situation going on with Nespresso capsule coffee machines and aftermarket capsules.
