Referring to something someone wrote in email

When you're referring to bad news in an email that someone wrote you and you want to reply something like "Sorry to hear about..." even though you didn't really hear them say it and you read it instead, is it still ok to use the word hear? "Sorry to read about" just sounds kinda weird..

Is this a serious thread? Why would you even ask this question?

Who cares whether or not you "heard" it with your ears, it's about the fact that you're giving your condolences.

Do you need help tying your shoes too?

Well my vote is use the word heard. In a world where IM/email is as common, or maybe more common then a phone call, read/heard is the same thing.
