Referral count in Profile - Does it do anything/Is it active?

Just want to know because I'm trying to get a friend to sign up and I want to get a lil tick mark that says I brought someone to the community.

If it's not active, I think it'd be a great way to grow the community. People love numbers, all new and shiny and stuff

Thoughts? Comments? Am I missing something?
