referb/used Xbox360's

I am considering buying a used or referb xbox. Some I see advertised on Ebay come with a 90 day warrenty (whatever that is). However, I have heard that Microsoft has extended the warrenty for over a year now on Xboxes due to the all too common RROD. If one got a referb, does Microsoft cover that? Anyone with experience along these lines can clue me in?

Refurbs are usually done by 3rd parties, and if they opened the console and broke the seals then no, Microsoft won't cover the system.

Refurbs are luck of the draw. You could get one with a manufacture date of 2006, which even if the case was never opened, and it was only played once wouldn't be covered by Microsoft.

It's best to spend a little extra to make sure that one, you're getting at least a Falcon or Jasper chipset, and two, you get the full warranty from MS and whatever the vendor offers.

Used it might also have a DVD drive that doesn't read discs reliably or worse yet scratches them. If a console is more than a year old this costs $100 to fix.

You're much better looking for a Hot Deal on a 60GB pro (around $250 is a common deal) or getting an Arcade for $150-175 and a used or new hard drive. It's much easier to find Jasper model arcade units than pro.

FYI, it's rumored that the Pro will change to a 120GB model for $299 list price this Fall. It might even be the Elite package with the HDMI cable and optical digital audio dongle.

I think it depends on the refurb. I bought mine from Gamestop and it is supposedly an "official" refurb. The box looked like a normal box but says "Refurbished" on it as does a sticker on the botton of the console itself. This has the full XBox warranty I think, but there are refurbs that only have a 90 days warranty.

Mine's been fine so far, so here's hoping I don't have to find out.

How much are the Gamestop refurbs? I might be interested in an arcade or 20 gb version - would be nice to get one with HDMI output too.

Refurbs directly from MS still carry the rest of the 3 yr warranty. I would STRONGLY advise against buying a refurb on eBay.

Getting a refurb isn't worth the hassle. Even if it's not DOA, the chances of the older style systems eventually crapping out are much higher.

If you get one hell of a deal it might make it worthwhile, but if you're only gonna save yourself a small percentage of buying a new system you might as go for the new one.
