Redunency vs. Hard drive Space

I wanted to be redundant today and back up my entire Hardrive (It's so old I'm fearing a crash!) And abou 1/3 of the way through I get an error message saying I'm out of hard drive space! When I started I was at 3/4 Free and it ate up the other 1/4! Is that normal??

I think you need to clarify a few things:

Where are you making the backup? If it's on the same drive, that's just silly and won't help you.

How big is(are) the drive(s)? having 3/4 free of a 20GB backup drive won't help if you are using 1/4 of an 80GB drive...

How are you backing up? What software? Any compression? Or are you just copying the files?

Ok, let's start from the beginning... f that, let's start before the beginning! Ok, are you backing up everything on the drive? If so or if not, what's the size of all the files put together that you wish to backup? where are you backing it up to? Another place or partition on the same drive? If so, wrong idea! Back it up to another drive! If another drive, then how big is the other drive and how much free space does it have?
