redundant means 2 or more, or to put it simply, it means backup power supply!

No, it's 2 or more power supply units, ideally with 2 or more seperate mains supplies (different circuits). (In mission critical installations, the 2 mains supplys come in from different parts of the building, having been sourced from seperate substations.)

If one power supply, or mains supply fails, then the remainder can keep the system up and running.

A UPS is a battery powered device that provides mains voltage electricity in the event of a mains supply failure - it doesn't protect against interal failure of the power supply.

Critical devices are often protected with redundant power supplies, each protected by a UPS.

If it's one or the other, go with the UPS. Good ones have surge protection and line voltage conditioning built in.

Having a redundant PSU doesn't help when there is no power coming into the neighborhood. Even if you have a backup generator, the UPS will carry thru until the generator starts.

although redundant power supplies are pretty cool, and usefully in extremely misison critical environments, a ups is much more important and usefull in the long run.
