reducing 6800gt heat

ok while my computers jus sat doin nout i figured i dont reallly need the 6800gt to be running 350/1000 in 2d mode do i?

can i underclock it abit to say 250-300 and maybe like 800 on the mem? to reduce heat or will it not have much affect. im using coolbits
