WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington quarterback Donovan McNabb has gone from getting benched to getting a contract extension from the Redskins, his agent says.
Fletcher Smith said Monday that the 33-year-old McNabb has agreed to a five-year, $78 million contract extension with the Redskins, with $40 million of the deal guaranteed.
ESPN first reported on the deal.
After acquiring McNabb in the offseason, the Redskins benched him late in Washington's loss on Oct. 31 to the Detroit Lions. Still, McNabb was expected to start Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Smith said the benching had no effect on negotiations and McNabb is "happy to be a beloved patriot."

I've heard so many explanations from the Skins I'm hesitant to believe any of them. Still, isn't he miles ahead of the alternatives (Grossman, Russel)?

When did it become bad to remove a player who is not performing for his backup? These coddled quarterbacks need a swift kick in the rear.

BTW Shanahan expects all his players to be in peak physical health not in Chunky soup
condition..

Mcnabb has always been his own worst enemy. Guy is straight stiff and had many injuries running out of bounds.....

Three picks and you should be benched even if your manning...

god damn for the amount of $$$ the Skins have dished out this century, they could have bought 7 out of the past 10 Superbowls.

they should learn from the Yankees in how to translate throwing massive $ around into a Ring or 3.

Insane.

Don't get me wrong - I like McNabb. When he was in Philly, I defended him more than Eagles fans. However....that's nuts. That contract is WAY beyond what he's worth at this point in his career. Which is Snyder's way - overpaying for vets past their prime. So much for the "new" Redskins in the Shanahan era.

Shanahan might just quit after this.

Holy crap Dan Snyder is worse than Al Davis and Jerry Jones combined. This is a real head scratcher.

Surprised at this after Shanahan benched him a couple of weeks ago. Kind of unrelated, but which QB you think the Dolphins will try to pick up to replace Pennington and Henne?

impossible. Danny boy moved ahead of Jerry when he hired a GM. Jerry will never do this...

A) Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells were both acting GMs.
B) While hiring the GM was supposed to usher in this new era of Redskins football where Snyder sat in the back seat, its clear that that's not the case. This contract extension is a prototypical Snyder move, to a T.

not if you ask Jerry. Who would you pick for a qb next year that's better?

In the early 90s, you're correct, Jones was a brash asshole that claimed the success of the team was his and not Johnson's. However, while he never officially relinquished the GM title, he openly admitted that Parcells was in charge of the team during those years.

What team are you referring to with your question? Not that it matters, I wouldn't switch QBs for the Cowboys or Redskins. However, that's not the question, so why are you asking? I'm not saying the Redskins should have cut McNabb. I'm saying he's not worth $78 million. Which he's most definitely not.

From a pure football stat (yards/TD/INT) perspective this is way overpaying him. However, he is the unquestioned leader in the locker room, the other players love him. That certainly has value. Additionally, having a serviceable QB on the roster for 3-5 years and not having to waste draft choices, training camp time, "QB controversy" time etc also has value.

Guys like McNabb, Hasselbeck, Flacco, Sanchez, etc may never be "superstars" like Peyton or Brady but the fact that their teams know they won't be chugging through Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Jake Delhomme, and Seneca Wallace in less than 12 months definitely has value.

where is parcells now? who is the cowboys gm today? and the redskins... if you are bruce allen, who is your qb next year? mcnabb was the best option... and he will never see 80 million. probably only half...

Right now? My guess is somewhere in Florida.

who is the cowboys gm today?
Jerry Jones. We covered that already.

Donovan McNabb, we covered that already too. And he'll see at LEAST half, since $40 million of that $78 million is guaranteed.

No one is denying that McNabb should be the QB of the Redskins. He is a good player. That doesn't justify grossly overpaying him. This is Dan Snyder - he does this all the time with older players. All the time. Are you a Redskins fan that just hasn't accepted that he makes this mistake over and over again, or are you just unfamiliar with Snyder's methods?

This isn't baseball. The NFL has a salary cap (well, usually). Frankly, its not very high. Last year it was $123 million. Lets say McNabb's cap hit this year is $15 million. That one player takes up over 12% of your cap - leaving you with 88% of your cap to sign 51 other players (and lets not forget that Haynesworth is taking a hefty chunk of it too - another Snyderism - leaving you with maybe 75-80% of your cap to sign 50).

You can't overpay an above average player like he's a star in the NFL. Not if you want to win, anyway.

it's a bad contract because McNabb is 33 years old and isn't close to an elite QB in the NFL. good job to the Redskins front office giving an old injury prone player a fat long term contract.

Chris Mortensen is now saying skins have chance to get out of contract after first year if not happy which makes more sense now
