For some reason, I don't feel 'Redoubt' is an appropriate name for a mountain that has erupted twice in the last 2 weeks.

Text

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Mount Redoubt volcano in Alaska has had another large eruption after being relatively quiet for nearly a week. The Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage says the volcano about 100 miles southwest of the city erupted early Saturday.

The National Weather Service said radar indicated a plume of volcanic ash rose 50,000 feet into the sky, making this one of the largest eruptions since the volcano became active on March 22.

Anyone near there that can get some good photos?

I don't think Redoubt means what you think it means. ;)

As a noun (not necessarily as a proper name in the case of naming a volcano), it essentially means a temporary or supplementary stronghold, or an entrenched defensive position. In a way, one could say Mt Redoubt is an entrenched stronghold for Earth. :p

No I knew what it meant. I just don't get the point of making a defensive post ON TOP of an active Volcano.
