I come from an area where there are many "Rednecks" (Trailer Trash, White Trash, take your pick). This "title" and the stereotypes that go with it are not something to be proud of around here. However, Gretchen Wilson wrote a whole song about it, buying into every stereotype and seeming rather proud.

After going to a concert where she was the opening act, and seeing many ladies jump up screaming this song along with her, it got me thinking--WHY WOULD YOU BE PROUD OF BEING A REDNECK???

LOL. Figures. I have nothing against her, honestly. Very talented lady (I happen to like country music). But this song is just TOO MUCH.

If I wasn't a married man and a few years too old for her I wouldn't mind partying with her. She sounds downright fun. No bullshyt, no games, just good wholesome fun.

What's your problem with her?

If funny someone writes a song about being a redneck and you think its over the top and most rappers go on and on about killing, stealing, drinking, smoking and doing drugs and thats just considered normal.

FYI: I hate country music so dont think im defending her--COUNTRY MUSIC SUCKS

Too much woman fer you! :p

Okie From Muskogee
by Merle Haggard
  • We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
    We don't take our trips on LSD
    We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
    We like livin' right, and bein' free.
    I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
    A place where even squares can have a ball
    We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
    And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all
    We don't make a party out of lovin';
    We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
    We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
    Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.
    And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
    A place where even squares can have a ball.
    We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
    And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.
    Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
    Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.
    Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
    And the kids here still respect the college dean.
    We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
    In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

I think her detractors are just jealous of her success.

It really is a terrible song. But having spent time in the south, with real southerners (not these transplanted northerners), I can see why the girls down here would love that song. It really describes them very well.

Please see above where I actually like her, like country, the whole bit. It's being proud of being a Redneck that I don't get.

How can you use such a racist slur as "redneck"?

Do you not respect multiculturalism?

I am a proud redneck-yuppie, dammit!

I am not a fan of country music, but I can see the why that song is appealing.

Because REAL rednecks remember when it wasn't a perjorative.
Being a Redneck used to mean a white person who was consigned to working outdoors in the field, much as the BLACKS were at that time.
It differentiated those that were in the fields, vs those that worked in "the big house with Mass'a" or in a factory or office.
AND 99% of all Southerners would rather set themselves apart from the rest of the country in one way or another, wether it's poolitics(sic), style of music, dress, or food.
That "taking possesion " bit also applies.

The song talks about being proud of yer background, i.e. being a redneck. you take the title and call it yankee woman or west coast woman and change the words in the song and you would have the same thing. then we could say "why would anyone want to be proud of that", and have the same effect. I listen to country, i like country, i'm from the country, i grew up on a farm, my town had 1200ppl, i say words like yall, aint, reckon, i'm a redneck. if you have a problem with it, then thats something you have to deal with. i dont like rap/hiphop or pop music. if you dont get the song, feel free to make fun of it if thats the way you deal with things of that sort. I'm proud of my background, are you?

**EDIT** for you city folk. milk comes from cows, not the store:D

well put. I'd go a bit further and say amongst people who actually view work as an honorable endeavour it isn't an insult.

It's only considered derogatory to the people who use it out of their own need to feel superior to someone else, mostly driven by knowledge of their own weakness and shortcomings.

Yup, it is also a fan service. She knows who her target audience is and sings directly to them. And nothing gets to your audience more than pride in what they are.

Ditto. Even if most people can't tell I grew up in the country... that doesn't mean that isn't where I grew up.
