Redmond, start your photocopiers

I like how Apple likes to present the image that they're so independent of Microsoft and bashes them at every chance they get yet without them they'd be screwed.

I don't get the "Introducing Longhorn" line. I don't understand what Longhorn has to do with Apple's new OS.

They're trying to imply that Longhorn will somehow be a "copy" of OSX Tiger.

I'm sure that one is gonna win alot of PC users over... lol 😛

I think it's funny how Apple likes to give everyone the impression that Microsoft is copying them at every turn and they are the ones being original. In fact, Apple copied just about everything from somewhere else, including some things from Microsoft.

Yay! Another $130 yearly OSX "upgrade." This should keep me busy updating all the "latest and greatest" macophile clients. Easy money...

actually it's MS that's copying apples desktop rendering engine (they are doing it in direct X if i remeber correclty) - stuff in longhorn will be what apple has had since 2001 (GL based off-screen buffer rendering etc).

As far as apple stealing stuff, they brought most of the interface in OSX from NeXT Step (protocols, widgets etc) and mixed and matched NeXT and BSD for the background.

MS copied their UI from XEROX as far as i can recall, whereas apple hired people that used to work for xerox.

I don't see how longhorn is even relevant though, it's not getting released till like 2020 or something...

MS had the idea to use hardware to render Windows since before 2000, but it was not feasible at the time. MS did not copy Apple. It was a logical step forward and both had the idea at the same time; Apple simply implemented it first. Next, Apple originally copied the UI from xerox. Microsoft copied the interface from a prototype that Apple was working on.

Yes, you are correct. MS is using DirectX in longhorn for the presentation layer. I do question why you would think it's not being released until like 2020. It's maybe a year and a half out, and that is mainly because most engineers are currently working on XP SP2, which will of course be integrated into Longhorn.

Without Apple, MS would be screwed. Apple is the innovation foundry that MS uses to improve their products, which is why MS has given so much money to Apple to keep them afloat.
