..heads up for redhead family and friends.

Oxidative Stress

The skin pigmentation of redheads is more prone to oxidation than the pigmentation of brunettes, Duke chemistry professor John Simon and colleagues found after isolating the two in the laboratory.

"Activating oxygen can produce compounds called radicals that put oxidative stress on cells," Simon said in a prepared statement. "Such stress could ultimately lead to cancer and other diseases."

I don't think that's anything that redheads don't already know about themselves. Most redheads tend to have more sensitive skin in general. My wife doesn't go in the sun without sunblock because she can't tan. Even with sunblock if she's out for a long time it skips tan and goes straight to burn.

I am still paying today for sunburns that I got 44 years ago when I was in my teens.
Sunblocks weren't available in the '50's, & even then & tried to limit my exposure.
I get burns in 5 - 10 minutes.

I got 'Moon-Tans' at the beach at night during grunnion runs & also out by Mt. Helix.

You know that Mt. Helix is almost gone now ? The kids have been going out there to knock off a piece for years.

Moonie, the burns you cause aren't like those due to intense light from the sun. Your burns are caused by hot air, kind of like a convection oven. ;)

My mother (redhead) had melanoma and already my daughter (3 yrs. old tomorrow), also a redheard, has shown signs of skin sensitivity (eczema).

You would think there'd be mounds of spiral Helix all over the parking lot if what you say is true.

Being a red (now gray) head, I knew there was a problem when my Dermatologist sold the Honda, bought a Mercedes and moved from the flat to the six room brick mansion!

Exactly, crap I'm a toe head and I have always avoided the sun. I keep a bottle of 20spf where ever I go just incase I get caught in the sun. I'm also supposed to wear sunglasses because the sun is more harmful to people with light colored eyes.

..I've had bad sunburns on my sighted toe too. Watchout for those mesh vented hats.

I can see that - first visit order the Mercedes, and then you come back in 6 weeks for a checkup . . .
when the house is ready for financing.
