redhat7.1 install trouble (ALPHA)

this is on an alpha. the cpu type. specifically, the computer is a multia/UDB 😀
anyway... it seems to die right after I set the root password. it just sits. I can switch terminals, 3 and 4 dont have new info since the swap activation. on vt2, i can run ps and see that python is eating all the cpu cycles (as expected - it runs the install program). However... even after an hour of sitting there nothing changes.

Any ideas?

any recommendations?
they're old. they cost $20 each. another kid bought them, i'm making them work (or at least trying 😉)
it took about 1/2 hour to figure out how to frikken boot the kernel from the CD and not die mounting root/loading init (god forbid the readme on the CD might tell you which of the .img's / .gz's to use 😉)

this is burn #2, burn #1 of the ISO resulted in pages of I/O errors on VT4. any recommendations? if it takes much longer, I have a bad feeling that they're going to be running winNT :Q

Here is a trick to alphas. The firmware (forget what they call it) can be 2 different models. I forget the names to each, but one works with UNIXes and the other works with NT. Try looking for information on alphas and see if you can find out what you have and what you need. Also, if you dont mind, if you added parts to it can you post what you added (ie video card and stuff). Ive got an alpha 166 w/mobo, but I dont have anything else for it yet and want to make sure I get stuff that will work 😉

If you're using SRM (the 3 carrot, >>>, prompt) and the box has a halt button, hit that and type 'cat el' that will show the SRM error log and you can see if anything hardware wise is up. Otherwise I would try a different distro and see what happens, it's possible python has issues on Alpha.

You could search the mailing list archives for the debian-alpha list, I got my initial help from them and they've very good, although since you're having a problem with RedHat's installer they'll probably point you to RedHat's alpha list if you post. There's even some people from Compaq on them.
