Redhat Linux 7.3 Install Issues

Dear Linux Users,

I have been using Mandrake Linux 8.0 (a retail edition). I recently downloaded the iso's for Red Hat Linux 7.3. Since most users swore by it as opposed to other distros.

I ran through the install process on this system.

Athlon 1ghz
256mb sdram
Geforce 2 TI
8x dvd
yamaha 16x burner
game surround fortissimo II

When booting for the first time the screen

Welcome to red hat linux

blah blah [ok]

displayed properly.

When the XServer should have started the monitior went blank and the hard drives continued to spin. I changed the boot to be a text only (no xserver) boot but the same thing occured. Could this just be a problem with my video driver? (I know my card has ddr ram on it!) Or something more elusive.

Thanks

You've verified that your inittab (/etc/inittab) is specified to runlevel 3 (id:3:initdefault🙂and you are still getting blackouts after services have initialized? No login prompt with a black background?

I assume you can see the services initializing on bootup? When does the blackout specifically occur?

Unfortunately,

It's hard to say. (It runs by quite quickly) The Windows user awnser would be..

I just saw a bunch of ok's on the screen. (That's about as much as I can tell you). Except that i tried changing the NVIDIA Geforce II GTS driver to NVIDIA Geforce II (and it didn't fix anything (same problem). I know the XServer can start properly because the install program starts correctly (and runs fine all the way through)!

In case this might matter i used these iso files valhalla-i386-disc1.iso, valhalla-i386-disc2.iso, and valhalla-i386-disc3.iso (did i dl the right ones?) Like i said i have just been using a commercial version of Mandrake..

P.S. Another reason I downloaded redhat was for the newer versions of the various packages including kde. Its turning out to be a much bigger hassle than i had hoped. (At least i can hope over to windows!)
