Hello all,

Well I have taken the plung and successfully installed Redhat Linux 7.3 as a dual boot to my existing WinXP system. Everything went great, the only problem is that I cannot access my wireless network. I have downloaded the drivers and soon discovered that I would have to compile the files.

When I tried to compile the file with the script it gave me an error about not finding the source files in /usr/src/linux. I looked at my system and saw that my directories were as follows /usr/src/redhat, but all of the directories were empty. Am I correct in thinking that I need to downloard the SRPMS discs and then install (or copy?) the files to these directories?

I am new to this whole linux scene, but I must say that I was impressed by the installation process. It was a breeze. Thanks in advance.

No you need to install a regular RPM package named kernel-source. Are you sure the WMP11 is supported under Linux?

Finally, you're right that Red Hat Linux installation is pretty straight-forward. I've seen a lot of reports that both Mandrake, and particularly SuSE have even better installations.

I tried to install the RPM, however it was for version 7.2. There was also a RPM for 7.1. I got the info from this site: Wireless Linux Lan, the only difference is that the site is using 7.1. I will try doing some more research to see if there is already a RPM compiled for 7.3. Thanks.

Good looking reference site you found there. You should be cool if you install the Red Hat kernel-source RPM package.

Also, if they provided a source RPM package for the drivers, it's really easy to compile a binary RPM package from it.

Finally, if the wlan-ng drivers don't work out for you, give the orinoco_cs drivers a shot. The nice thing about the orinoco_cs drivers is they are part of the standard kernel. Orinoco devices are very popular so if the wlan-ng drivers don't pan out, there is probably a standard way of getting Red Hat to use orinoco_cs drivers without compiling a thing.

Sorry if that sounds a bit confusing, but good luck and LMK if you get stuck.

RH 7.3 has drivers already compiled for it.

All you should have needed to do is edit the file /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts and the section containing your card (Quite possibly the Orinoco section) with the WAP key, ESSID and Managed for infrastructure mode or Ad-Hoc for Ad-Hoc mode.
