Hmmm what do you guys think about mandrake? I am thinking about loading one of my notebook with it and meddle with it alittle.
I like to know how much space will it take?
And how stable it is?
And what freeware software is available?
"I cant seem to find my way round some of those linux site when it comes to free download." The ftp download is so darn slow too.
And how well is the linux OS in drivers available for wireless and notebooks?
I like Mandrake. It's the most user-friendly version I've used.
As to wireless networking, it can be a problem. You have better luck with wireless pcmcia adaptors than with USB. But other than that, you should be fine with the notebook. In fact, linux is great for notebooks (except for the boot-up time) because they tend to use more standard components.
I really dont know what you mean by mandrake being "user friendlier" than redhat. All these distros use the same window managers -- KDE/Gnome. Mandrake does have better hardware recognition tool(Drake) but its nowhere as stable as redhat(mdk hung on my nforce based system several times). So if your system supports it go for redhat 8.0
for those who dont know and are interested in a canned solution for firewall, file/print server etc go check out SME and dload the developer of v5.6, new version based on RH 2.4 kernel.
Its a very good linux solution for small shops looking at MS licensing and gasping for air.
