i have a redhat 9 box setup and i want to use telnet.. i edited the config file to turn it on.. restarted the service and it said success.. i can telnet to localhost.. but from my other machine i cant.. they are both behind my router with NAT (linksys).. i shouldnt have to have a port forward open. i set up a port forward for 23.. to my redhat box and then tried to access the internal IP and the external IP.. both with no success.. i checked the hosts.allow and hosts.deny and nothing.

any ideas?

i think redhat installs iptables by default, might want to make sure that its not blocking you.
also, you should ditch telnet in favor of ssh. telnet is ALL clear text. ssh is fully encrypted.

i keep reading about SSH and everyone saying.. use it use it.. and thats fine.. i probably will.. BUT.. SSH DOESNT COME WITH DOS.. so now i cant just do a quick 2mins adjustment to my server with a remote windows machine.. i gotta download a ssh client and §hit .. its just not practical for me.. if i had a remote machine .. say.. like home to office or something then yes i would use SSH.. and as far as from within my local network.. im behind a firewall and no data is outgoing from .3 to .4 locally.. im not worried about security.. i just want to be able to get this setup and then ill move up to ssh and sftp..

now as far as the iptables.. what do you mean by these and where can i get to them?

thanks

yes i like the putty for windows.. because its not an installation.. just a file.. put it on my pen drive and then i dont have to worry about it.. so ill probably use that too and i got ssh setup .. havent started on sftp yet i like to research the §hit a little better you know.. ok well thanks guys..

my next big concern is getting my email services running properly and setting them up and configuring users.. and all of that.. if anyone has a good tutorial please let me know.. thanks
