After a fresh installation of redhat linux v8 upon first boot up I typed in startx and got an error instead of the GUI:

ERROR: Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found

After that I went into xf86config and did all the video/display, etc options. Once done I tested startx again and same error.

What can cause this? During initiall install it found the monitor and listed it correctly. So Im not sure why now it can't see it?

Thanks for anything.

Try running XFree86 -configure and see if it comes up with the background and mouse pointer correctly. That creates a file in /root that you can use as your config file. I've had that problem when trying to use generic VESA drivers instead of i810 for instance. -TAL

When I did XFree86 I got the same error. No screens found.

Above it says: (EE) Screen found, but none have usable configuration.

This is so annoying. How can this OS see something upon install, work fine, but then upon final boot suddenly not be able to use it? Its nuts.

This may be caused by incorrect modelines being specified for a particular resolution. You could delete the modelines and rerun the setup program, it worked for me when I had the same problem.
