Ive freshly installed Redhat 8.0 on a new system with the ASUS P4PE motherboard. My only problem is that the sound is not functioning. When I get into the sound detection area in the control panel it recognizes a sound device as an intel 810 codec but according to the Motherboard manual, the onboard sound on the P4PE is based on ADI AC'97 codec. When i click on the test sound button, nothing comes out.

The motherboard works for sure because when I boot the system up, the ugly womans voice comes out "computer now booting from operating system". So I suspect it is a problem with RH 8.0

Anyone know what to do here? Do I have to download some patches or drivers ? I tried the alsa-project package but when i tried to compile the source it would give me tons of errors. so im kinda of stumped.

I was unable to get OSS sound working for RH 8 with an i810 in my laptop, also. ALSA worked fine for me, though - just make sure you follow directions, get the 9.3 release, and have fully configured kernel source before you start.

i just went back to the alsa-project home page. Dont see the 9.3 release but i do see the 0.9.0rc5 release. I think i know why i was getting errors when trying to compile the source. I was using 0.5.12 release and on their news page they said this "The fix for GCC 3.2 has been integrated into the 0.9.0rc5 package". I believe Redhat 8.0 uses the new GCC 3.2, so i think that was my problem there. Anyways, thanks for the tip.

Just to try something- Adjust the second PCM setting on your mixer tab. I have an OEM board with the ADI 1887 (I think) and it is an AC97 BUT it has 2 PCM controls the 1st one works as long as the second PCM is set to full volume
