RedHat 7.3 on MSI nForce -- HELP

I'm trying to install Redhat 7.3 on my computer, which has the nForce chipset. According to Xfree86, the nForce is supported with xfree86 4.2.0, which apparently (I think) is what Redhat 7.3 comes with.

Now the problem is that I go through the installation, choose "GeForce2 MX (generic)" as the video card to use with gnome, installation finish, I reboot into Linux, and when the GUI login screen is suppose come up, I get a complete blank screen.

What confuses me is that I can choose GeForce2 MX as a video card to install, but if I go through all the packages available in anaconda (Redhat installation program), under the Xfree86 package and the Xfree86 hardware support packages, it seems like the X Windows server available is only the xfree86 3.3.6 (the package 'nv' isn't there, which according to Xfree86 is the package you want to install for any nVidia graphics card).

so what's going on here?
And, if I download the xfree86 4.2.0 binaries from their ftp, how do I integrate that into the Redhat installation?

thanks for any help you guys could provide. appreciate it.

ctrl-alt-F2 to get to a console. From there, login, make sure XF86 4.2 or whatever is installed, and follow the FAQ (in the Linux FAQ thread) about installing nVidia's proprietary drivers.

I tried that (ctrl + alt + F2), but it wouldn't even get to a console. When I reach the part where the KDE login screen is supposed to show up, I tried pressing NumLock or CapsLock but neither LEDs lit up. It's kinda like the behaviour when the computer has halted or crashed, that it wouldn't respond to keyboard inputs.

Some more specifics.. I have install RedHat onto my laptop, and in the RPM manager, XFree86 is listed as version 4.2.0, so I'm confident that it should work. During the RedHat installation on my nForce desktop, for the monitor I choose "Generic Monitor 1280 * 1024 @ 74Hz" which I know my monitor can handle (Samsung SycMaster 755df), and for X config I had it at 1028 * 1024 @ 24-bit color, using KDE, graphical log on.

So what's going on here? Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

and a sidenote, if I go into console logon mode, what command do I use to get back into GUI mode?

oh, another question... how do I prevent KDE from starting up during the boot sequence without going through the RedHat installar and choosing not to have it start up automatically?

Btw, I also have installed Mandrake 8.2 on this same computer, and the video worked fine (althouth the mouse didn't work nor ethernet, which renders it almost useless without networking).

have you gotton X to work at all?

the command to get into Xwindows is startx

gotto redhat's website to find out specific stuff about the redhat installation process.... It should ask you if you want to boot up into the Xwindow logon shouldn't it (then pick no)? If it doesn't try skipping the Xwindows setup altogether.... the graphical login crashing your computer is not a good sign

try one of the command line Xwindows setup programs like XF86setup or X86Config

The whole booting into X login stuff is very annoying to me, why do vendors insist on making it defualt? If it doesn't work right then you are lost and so is the intallation...... *sigh*

tobad you are having a rough time with the installation

thanks for the tip, drag. 🙂
unforunately I don't have time to fiddle around with it yet as I'm currently in the middle of the final exams period.
but I'll try that out after.

although I did have X working perfectly fine on my laptop. I guess you can't use "startx" after you've already started X Windows, and do ctrl + alt + F2 to get to console login... I tried that and got a whole bunch of random errors saying X has been started already. That's normal, right?
