I installed Rh7.0 and I can boot to the root prompt fine, but when I go to start up X, it quits out on me saying server error: no screens found...

I think this is because I don't have the correct driver installed. I checked redhat.com's hardware compatability list and it says the Geforce 2mx is not supported right off the install disk.

So, since I'm a linux newbie, exactly how do you install the correct drivers? Thanks! :)

If you want hardware-accelated OpenGL (for Quake3 and such), look Nvidia's homepage under linux drivers. There is pretty exhaustive documentation, too. But, for using Nvidia drivers, you probably have to upgrade your X-windows server. For dowloading latest X, go XFree86 homepage.. You have to upgrade your X server anyway to get graphics work, though (latest XFree 4.1.0 has native support for GF2MX).

I had the same problem with RH 7.0, it would not recognize my MX for anything. I actually gave up on trying to get RH 7.0 installed. But, RH 7.1 and Mandrake 8.0 recognize the MX from the install, so if getting either of those two versions is a possibility I would go for it.

Other than that I can't offer any advice, sucks being a Linux newbie. :(

If you download the drivers from the nvidia site, and install them as listed in the instructions given the card should work fine. Im using them in RH 7 and they work very well. Fast too!

i'm actually not sure how to do it the RPM way..heh never really used RH,mandrake for various reasons...
however ..there are great instructions at tomshardware.com under the graphics section of how to install linux drivers for nvidia cards based on source files :)
