The layout of my master closet wasn't done very well. I'm not even going to bother posting pictures because it needs to be completely changed. If any of you have any suggestions, I'm all ears at this point. Here are some of my thoughts:

  • I'd like to have more drawers and less hangers. Hangers are still necessary, but right now the entire closet is hanger bars (literally all the way around and in the middle).
  • The only shelves available are above the hanger bars. I think clothes could be stacked (two hanger bars per wall) and there could still be a shelf on top (1.5' for a shelf + 6.5' for two hanger bars).
  • The floor is carpet and that's not going to change.
  • I'd like to have an island with a counter top.
  • Shoes could go in the island, but I'm not against a built-in for shoes on the wall.
  • There are electrical outlets throughout, but I'll be moving most of those by the end of the project to wherever they need to be.
  • If there's leftover space, I may dedicate a small amount to a gun rack.

Dimensions (~143 sq. ft.):

I think all of our clothes could fit on the left side of the room (the 4'9" x 9'3" section) with double hanger bars all the way across. That leaves the rest of the room wide open.

I've been looking at several websites, but nothing has really stuck out to me. Any ideas?

That closet is bigger than our master bedroom.

Edit: For shits and giggles I google image searched on closet island. Tis time for that revolution we keep meaning to stage but have been putting off.

There are those hanging box things - some are meant for shoes, others have larger openings for sweaters and such (folded up and placed into its own little "shelf." Take a trip to the container store if you have one in your area. Get ideas, then go buy the exact same stuff for a reasonable price somewhere else.

lol. I certainly don't think I need an island in my closet to be happy, but there's a lot of space and there's really nothing else to do with it. I've also considered putting a weight bench in there, but that seems weird.

The master bedroom in this house is ridiculously huge. I actually have plans to carve off a piece to make another bedroom. The first property I owned was a condo that was 1050 sq. ft. all inclusive. The master bedroom (plus all associated rooms - closet, bathrooms, and suite) in my current house is nearly that size. The closet is a huge waste of space, though, so it really needs to be fixed. Actually, the bathroom has a lot of extra space as well, but one room at a time.

Houzz had some cool ideas. A contractor who specializes in closets is coming over tomorrow to take a look at the space. I was hoping to get some ideas before she shows up, but it's a difficult thing to design from afar. I'll probably end up doing most of the work myself if the bid is outrageous, which I'm sure it will be.

Lastly, lol @ the private message suggesting a multi-person sex swing. The boss probably wouldn't go for it, but A for effort.

After watching south park I can officially say that you will fit more stuff in there if you can get Tom Cruise to come out of it.

I'd suggest going to a few closet design studios and just seeing what kind of stuff they come up with. At the very least you'll get some good ideas.

Good idea.

I'm actually going to go measure the rest of my master bedroom to see if something more drastic should be done. I'd hate to do the closet only to regret it later because I should have moved the bathroom wall.
