DETROIT (CP) - Paul Kariya scored at 3:18 of the third overtime and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 63 saves to give the Anaheim Mighty Ducks a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the first game of their Eastern Conference quarter-final Thursday night.
Kariya picked up a loose puck shortly after a faceoff in the Detroit end and snapped a low shot past Curtis Joseph's blocker side.
But Giguere was the star of the game as Detroit outshot Anaheim 64-44. The Red Wings had 36 shots in overtime of the longest game in Anaheim's history.
Brendan Shanahan gave Detroit a 1-0 lead on a power play 4:15 into the game.
But Adam Oates beat Curtis Joseph at 15:33 of the first to tie the game and the two teams then battled for the lead - mostly in the Anaheim end during the extra periods.
Anaheim outshot Detroit 31-28 through regulation, but the Red Wings dominated the first OT, outshooting the Ducks 20-4. Detroit also had a 14-8 advantage in the second overtime.
