Doug is a fool for that. Now if it was a long time member of the team like Varitek I could understand him keeping it but jeez..the team won its first championship in 86 freakin years. Put it in a display or something.

Guess this means Doug wont be a member of the Red Sox next season eh?? Not sure how his teammates feel about this but I would be annoyed especially if "he has a price".

Doug calls the ball his "retirement fund" and "I'm thinking, there's four years at Florida State for one of my kids". Didn't know he was too poor to afford to send his kids to college.

I believe this may fall under the supreme court "finders keepers losers weepers" law of 1891.

Exactly. If I was Theo I would meet with him and say, we want the ball back. When he says no, I would say, you are cut. End of story.

What does Doug M lose in that situation? He does not want to be on the Red Sox anyway as a late inning defensive replacement.

I do not see an issue with him keeping the ball, but his comments are shameful. He should have just said he wants to keep the ball for sentimental value :(

I don't think his teammates give a crap. And I don't either.

I would keep it too.

That is fine. If he keeps it he keeps it. But to say I have a price and want someone to pay for my kids education when most people in the stands have trouble paying for their kids education is deplorable.

Yup, that's the worst part about it. We all understand that most atheletes are spoiled and greedy. This is like Spreewell saying he needs a raise or an extension b/c he needs to "put food on the table" for his kids. Unless by "kids" we means the entire nation of south africa, then comments like this are way out of line and are a mockery to us working folks.

he makes $2,800,000 a year. How can he not put his kids through Florida State? If lives in Florida, I have to ask that question even more. He makes enough to even buy his kid's way into an ivy league school.

BTW, I think it's fine if he wants the ball, but his comments on the topic are, well, what I'd expect from a dumb jock. :D

The article said he was kidding about the retirement fund thing. Also says he's a community guy. Anyway, maybe he's trying to use it as contract negotiation stuff, but, maybe he's just trying to ensure it'll be put on display and not be sold off at all?

Even if he keeps it, well, that sucks but he did catch it... he could have thrown it off into the stands and let some random fan have it too... :p

WEEI (boston's main sports radio station), had an interview with Doug's wife just a bit ago. This thing has gotten way overblown.

Basically the line about putting his kid through florida state was dripping with sarcasm (golly gee..those state schools are mighty expensive for those millionaire atheletes).

They had not been even asked or approached by the Red Sox about handing over the ball or displaying it in some museum etc...but said they would gladly do so if they comply.

The Red Sox have known for 3 months that they have had it, heck MLB CERTIFIED that it was theirs the day after the WS AT Fenway.

So basically, this is Shaugnessy (The guy that made tons by writing the book about the "Curse"), scratching for a non-story to sell papers basically.

Definitely more important things in the world to worry about, and just from watching Doug (I'm saying Doug because I dont want to try to spell his name) play for the sox and see his interviews, he is NO Latrell Sprewell by any means.

Yes, he probably will be traded because they have two 1b that want to play full time, and who can blame them? Both are capable starters.

I hope he comes to the Mets. After the Mo Vaughn/Mike Piazza/Jason Phillips first base disasters from the past couple of years the team needs a player that can CATCH the freakin ball. I'm sure the Mets could give the BoSox some minor league bums or something.

I'm a Minnesota Twins fan and have kept up with Doug throughout his time here in Minnesota. He is a stand up guy with a good sense of humor. I took his comments in the article as sarcasm, because that's the way he was here in Minnesota.

I do feel that he has the right to keep the ball, and what's it matter anyway? Don't they have a World Series trophy or rings to put on display?
