Red Sox should pitch Wakefield again.

What happens is, their fingertips get sore and their pitches start sailing out of the strike zone. That's why they took him out last night. It's not an arm strength issue.

do you think there is any chance he pitches 3 games in this series??

also, the rain out the other day gives them a HUGE advantage as they are soo much more dependent on Pedro doing well than the yankees are on any single pitcher.

lol not one days rest - Maybe game 7...even over Pedro :Q

edit - A lot of the articles on ESPN are saying Game 5 Lowe, Game 6 Burkett, and Game 7 Martinez or Wakefield...

Whichever one of them doesn't start would definitely be able to come in in relief though...

I'm sure he'll be lurking in the bullpen for game 7. If Pedro shows any sign of weakness, you will probably see Wakefield.

Ideally, the Red Sox would probably like to pitch Pedro on 3 days rest in game 6 and Wakefiled in game 7 (if it gets there). But Pedro can't pitch on 3 days rest, he looked exhausted during his last start. So he'll need his full rest and that lines him up for game 7. If it gets there, what a classic matchup that would be. Clemens Vs. Pedro in Yankee Stadium for a chance to go the the world series. Wow. It doesn't get better than that.

This is definitely what is beign said. If the Sox go up 3-2 tonight, I don't mind Burkett in Game 6. We go down 2-3, I'd like Pedro to pitch with Wakefield to back him up. Hell, start Timlin for all I care... I just don't want all our hopes resting with Burkett

As a Yankee fan, I can't wait for Burkett.

Yeah, the knuckleball is his only major league quality pitch, but when you are throwing floaters at 60+ mph and then you throw a 78 mph fastball, it looks like a 90 mph pitch.

I read today that Wakefield said he could even pitch today out of the bullpen if they need him for a couple innings from HERE..

``Right now I feel great,'' said Wakefield, who also picked up the win in Game 1 in Yankee Stadium. ``But I may be running on adrenalin right now. I could be available (today). I don't know. But I don't want to take anything away from Derek (Lowe, today's starter). He's pitched great at home, and we are excited that he's going to get a start here.''

OMG the Yanks are in some serious trouble with Wake in that bullpen for ALL THREE GAMES COMING UP!!!!!

What I liked about Wakefield last night was how he was able to correct his delivery to get his Knuckler to dance instead of Rolling up there. In the First inning his Pitches were hanging but after the first inning he adjusted his delivery and was awesome

On his interview after the game, he said that the bottom was actually dropping out last night, unlike in game 1 at NY. I'm sure NY hitters couldn't even tell the difference... 🙂

Wakefield coming out of the bullpen does not scare me as much as him starting. When he comes out of the bullpen he wont have time to adjust. He's going to be coming into tough situations. He won't be able to afford to walk anyone.

always wonderd about that. why they couldnt go on a shorter rest. but i guess it would be hard on the fingertips.

not like he is hurting his arm 70mph pitches? sheesh. nothing like some of th eons that throw 100mph heh

Well, that remains to be seen. Just because he got into a couple of tough innings due to walks doesn't mean that he will always walk people in pressure situations. Who knows, put a little pressure on him and maybe he doesn't walk anyone... either way, the Yanks won't hit him well IMO, it's just a matter of if he beats himself.

The first inning yesteday forced him to make adjustments. He won't be able to do that from the pen. He's been a failure as a closer, and he's been hit hard coming out of the bullpen in the past.
