Red Sox, ARod - Manny Ramirez deal in trouble. Update: Deal Dead.

damn union

Scrap it all and start over. I'll play a game for a cool hundred thousand or 2 🙂
Hard to believe that you can make 20 million a year to just play a sport for 1/2 a year.

From what I can tell, ARod theoretically could agree to a deal w/o the union's blessing, but according to that article, won't do such a thing. I guess he'd rather continue playing for a last place team, as opposed to joining a team that looks damn impressive if they acquire him.

20 minutes until the deadline...

The Sox could always bail out Hicks and just pay off his contract as is.
Tom Hicks should reap what he has sown. All of the other owners told him that contract was stupid. Now his Stars are losing money and the hockey lockout is looming and the rest of his business is heading down and he needs some relief.
Too bad, you made the mistake, deal with it.

Its amazing how the Union keeps coming out looking worse and worse.

What do you mean?

Somebody has to stand up for poor, exploited baseball players.

They don't want to "reduce" his contract and set a precedent. Then another owner will want to do the same thing with someone else and defer some money. So they have a valid point. But why leave ARod to waste away on a last place team? The right thing for the Union to do is to let him go to the east coast and shine.

Yes, we love Nomah, BUT, Manny has got to be the laziest SOB ever to play the game. Yes, he's one of the best hitters ever, but he can't play the field to save his life, makes too many mental mistakes, and too many times his head is elsewhere other than in the game. A-Rod is the MVP, better than both Manny and Nomar. Nomar has one year left on his contract, and who's to say he isn't gone after next year anyway? I say get the deal done! I'll miss both of them, buit you just can't pass up Arod.

Baseball really should adopt something along the lines of football. If you suck, you get your salary reduced.

There are way too many mediocre baseball players getting paid millions of dollars to play thanks to the Players Union and guaranteed contracts. Seriously, how many .500 pitchers are there that are getting paid in the high millions? Its ridiculous and the fans end up paying for it with ridiculous ticket prices.

Well duh....the Union is not concered with the overall well being of a player and their teams. The only issue they're concerned with is how much a player makes, which directly determines how much the union officials make. In this case, A-Rod will make less with the restructured deal (their opinion), and they won't allow that. Its ironic how concerned A-Rod is with the well being of other players..and that he doesn't want to set a precedent. It sure didn't look that way when he signed that huge contract and basically destroyed the Ranger's ability to sign anyone else, and set the precedent for how much a player makes. If A-Rod wants to prove that the only thing he has in his mind is not greed, then just screw the Union and player for a good team.

If Nomar really wanted to play in Boston for the rest of his career, he would have accepted the contract extension in the beginning of the year. Fvck him and let him and his whiny agent go.

We should of signed Tejeda for much lower price. 🙁

Its funny that you complain about how much money Nomar wants when Boston is getting the highest paid player in the game to replace him. There is a line between getting paid a respectable amount, and equal to your peers, and getting overpaid. A-Rod is definitely over paid. I think all Nomar wanted to do was to get comparable pay to his peers (jeter, tejada) For someone who is as good as Nomar (2nd best offensive ss) he should be paid equal if not more than jeter and tejada.

What??! $15 million a year is not enough? Yes, we know Arod is overpaid, but we're replacing two players, one who makes $20 million a year.

Hard to believe that you can make 20 million a year to just play a sport for 1/2 a year.
I don't understand why baseball players are even making those figures. The game is a lost cause as many of the owners are losing money each year. It will never be as popular as basketball and football. That's like paying the Michael Jordan of WNBA 15 million a year to play the game JUST because she's the best player in the league.

wht's the point of Basketball ? All you need to do is watch last 3 mins of the game and now without jordon NBA will soon to the way of WNBA.

most people believe this deal will get done. basically, hicks just has to stop being greedy and be satisfied with the amount of money he's saving trading ARod for Manny.

also, IF this works to help reduce the role of the Union in Baseball, i'll have NO problems with that. the Union in MLB had more power than any other sports union and it is disproportionately impacting where this league is going.

It may not be dead, Peter Gammons said he wouldn't be surprised if talks resumed this weekend and the deal was done by xmas. It was a major revelation that Hicks (Texas owner) cut the money he wants from 25 mil to 15 mil on the Manny $$$ issue.

Arod looks like a jackass now b/c it shows that he's really all about the money, and not winning like he said. To say, "Oh I'll take 30 million less, IF the player's union approves it (knowing full well that they won't)" is pure BS. ARod could have turned his back on the player's union at any time and did the deal, he's just a greedy bitch. Are you really unhappy Alex? Well put your money where your mouth is and tell the union to shove it, you pssy.

Also, who is Bud Selig to say WHEN AND WHERE a deal can and can't be discussed? The media really slammed him for his time limit of 5pm yesterday, what a crock of sht. If a 2 teams want to discuss a complex trade, they should have as much time as they need to negotiate. The negotiations weren't a detriment to MLB in any way, in fact they were hyping it, so I don't see where Selig has ANY say here.

The deal was done, all interested parties agreed (Texas, A-Rod, and Boston) when the union stepped in and said "Um, no!". Gammons for the most part is usually right on with his observations, don't have any reason to doubt him this time around.
