Red ring of death but...

So i tried to turn on my brand new 360 to dat, and i get the red ring of death. im pissed because i think i have falcon (next to output on the power brick it says 175 watts). But then i redid all the power connections and it worked fine. wasnt the ring of death supposed to mean it was shot. Just want to make sure im in the clear on this. thanks

I'd say "RTFM" but I just checked PDF TFM and MS doesn't bother to tell customers about the redring code for loose power cables in the troubleshooting section of TFM. Good job MS!

i should have said that i was 3 red lights. so i think it was RROD. And you mentioned something about a loose power cable. that sounds right, the part that connects to the brick did seem loose. Suggestions for further action?

It sounds like you fixed the loose connector problem when you "redid all the power connections and it worked fine."

So it's nothing to worry about. RRoLC just looks similar to RRoD (three steady vs. three blinking if I recall correectly), it's a completely different problem.

okay thanks. So just to confirm, 3 steady is RRoLC? Thanks again. That would have bee very annoying after only having it for a week if it had been potentially fatal to the consol. And i also have another question that i dont think is workthy of its own new thread since i have a perfectly good one right here. Is there any risk/benefit to keeping the Xbox on its side as opposed to having it upright? im thinking particularly of heat. For that matter are there any risks/benefits to keeping it upright?
thanks again

Have to agree with Dave on a loose connector. My 360 3ROD'd when I had a brown out. (when the 360 was on)

After I turned it off, it's been fine ever since.

If it RROD again, it'd probably shot.

Also, to answer specWB's question: On it's side is more stable, less prone to disc read errors, and quieter. I'd only be better to have it standing up if you don't have room.

I had the same problem... saw the red rings a couple times. The last time I just checked the power cable, for whatever reason, & it was really loose, barely connected. Since fixing it I never seen them again, but my 360 is really flaky. The DVD drive constantly sticks & gameplay randomly freezes in intervals occasionally.... like a short "shutter" effect. Also, this thing is frigging LOUD.

Still works though. Had it since August 06.

Ya, when I worked at Gamestop, anytime the power would go out and come back on (which happened way too often now that I think about it), the demo 360 would come back on and have 3 red lights. A simple reboot would fix it every time.
